A Service Person at DVLA Accused of Stealing GH¢308,000 in MoMo Fraud
GH¢308,000 has been allegedly stolen from a service person at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in a MoMo (mobile money) fraud, with the complainant claiming the accused bought a Hyundai Elantra saloon car, a Samsung 50-inch TV, and other items using the stolen money.
The alleged theft was discovered on May 22nd after the complainant noticed an unauthorized withdrawal of GH¢3,000 from their mobile money account.
The transaction, which involved the transfer of GH¢308,300, was reportedly done in several tranches, with the accused using the money to purchase various items, including a Hyundai Elantra saloon car and a Samsung 50-inch TV.
According to reports, the accused, who is a National Service Personnel (NSS) at the DVLA, allegedly used the stolen money to purchase the items without the knowledge or consent of the complainant. The incident has raised concerns about the security and integrity of the mobile money system in Ghana, with many calling for stricter measures to prevent such cases of theft.
In a statement, the DVLA said the money at the centre of the alleged theft case does not belong to the Authority and was not taken from any of its accounts.
The statement, however, failed to address the specific allegations made by the complainant, including the purchase of the Hyundai Elantra saloon car and the Samsung 50-inch TV using the stolen money.
The incident has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many calling for the accused to be brought to justice. The Ghanaian Times reports that the DVLA has denied losing any money in the alleged theft, saying that the money was not taken from any of its accounts.
However, the complainant’s claims remain unverified, and the incident is still under investigation. As the case unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the accused will be held accountable for the alleged theft and what measures will be taken to prevent similar cases in the future.
