An 18-year-old American college student, Nolan Xavier Wells, has been found dead on Horn Island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast, days after he went missing during a Fourth of July trip with friends.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Wells was last seen around 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, on Horn Island, a barrier island about 10 miles south of Pascagoula, Mississippi. He had travelled to the island with a group of friends to celebrate Independence Day but did not return on the same boat as the rest of the group.

His mother, Christine Wonsley, contacted law enforcement around midnight on Saturday to report that her son had not come home, triggering a large search operation. Officials described Wells as an 18-year-old Black male, approximately 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighing 180 pounds, last seen wearing blue swim trunks and sunglasses.
A wide search operation
The search drew in several agencies, including the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the Gulf Islands National Seashore, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, with support from the volunteer group United Cajun Navy. A command post was set up at the Lake Mars Boat Launch in Ocean Springs, and search boats and aircraft were deployed over the weekend and into Monday morning.

At around 8:45 a.m. on Monday, July 6, a U.S. park ranger discovered a body in the water at the northwestern tip of Horn Island. Sheriff John Ledbetter said the remains matched Wells’ description. Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd said he had no reason to believe it was not Wells but stated that DNA testing would be carried out for a formal identification, with an autopsy scheduled for Tuesday, July 7.
Shortly before 1 p.m. on Monday, Wells’ family confirmed his death on social media. In an emotional Facebook post, his mother said the family was devastated, describing her son as a special soul who was always willing to cheer and uplift others.
Remembered as a student and athlete
Wells was a 2025 graduate of Ocean Springs High School, where he played football, and was a wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College. Both institutions released statements mourning his death.

His former high school head football coach, Jake Bramlett, said the football family was devastated, describing Wells as a humble young man whose character spoke louder than his accomplishments. Southwest Mississippi Community College President Dr. J. Steven Bishop said the entire college was heartbroken, remembering Wells as a well-respected and popular member of the campus community, and confirmed that counsellors and local ministers would be made available to support grieving students and teammates.
Investigation ongoing
Sheriff Ledbetter said the matter remains an active investigation and appealed to the public to give the family and Wells’ close friends space to grieve. He assured residents that his office was treating the case as thoroughly as any other and that investigators were still gathering information from those involved in the situation.

The circumstances surrounding exactly how Wells died have not yet been officially released, and authorities have not confirmed any of the theories circulating on social media. Nsemwokrom.com will provide updates as more verified information becomes available.
