Dagbon Kingdom Loses its King: Haruna Iddrisu Eulogises Ya-Na Abubakari

The Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abubakari Mahama II, has passed away after customary rites were performed at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi. The news of his demise was met with tributes from various quarters, with the Tamale South MP, Haruna Iddrisu, being one of the first to pay his respects. In a statement, Haruna Iddrisu described Ya-Na Abubakari Mahama II as a leader whose commitment to peace, reconciliation, and unity transformed the kingdom and left a lasting legacy for future generations.

According to Haruna Iddrisu, Dagbon had lost not only its king but also one of its greatest advocates for unity. "Today, Dagbon has lost more than a king; we have lost a great unifier," the statement said. The tribute reflected on the rich history of the ancient Dagbon Kingdom, noting that it was founded between the 13th and 15th centuries by northern warriors led by the legendary Tohazie, known as the "Red Hunter". This history is a testament to the resilience and determination of the people of Dagbon.

Ya-Na Abubakari Mahama II is being remembered for upholding the legacy of Dagbon's founding rulers while strengthening peace and stability within the kingdom. "You stood on the enduring legacy of your forebears, Naa Gbewaa and his grandson, Naa Nyagsi, who consolidated and strengthened Dagbon's formal political structure," the statement said. The late monarch was also praised for fostering reconciliation and bringing together the rival royal gates, helping to sustain peace after years of conflict.

The people of Dagbon are being urged to honour the King's memory by preserving the unity he worked to restore, particularly through the continued observance of the traditional rotational succession system. "The greatest tribute we can pay to your memory is to preserve and strengthen the unity you restored by faithfully upholding our cherished rotational succession tradition," the statement said. This tradition, which ensures that the Abudu and Andani royal gates succeed each other in power, is seen as a key factor in maintaining peace and stability in the kingdom.

As Dagbon mourns the loss of its king, the people of the kingdom are coming together to pay their respects and celebrate the life of Ya-Na Abubakari Mahama II. The king's legacy will undoubtedly be remembered for generations to come, and his commitment to peace, reconciliation, and unity will continue to inspire the people of Dagbon to work towards a more harmonious and prosperous future.
