Ghana could be set to miss out on another promising dual-national talent after reports emerged that Jesse Bisiwu is leaning towards continuing his international career with Belgium despite efforts by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to convince him to switch allegiance.

Recent reports indicate that the GFA has been in contact with Bisiwu’s representatives as it explores the possibility of bringing the youngster into the Black Stars setup.

Jesse Bisiwu

Bisiwu, who was born in Belgium to Ghanaian parents, is eligible to represent both countries at senior level. He has already represented Belgium at youth level, including appearances for the country’s Under-17 side. The Belgian Football Association’s official records also show him representing Belgium at U18 and U19 level.

The 18-year-old winger has recently attracted even more attention following his move to FC Barcelona from Club Brugge. Reports say the GFA has made several approaches to his camp as Ghana looks to secure his international future.

However, according to the latest information, Bisiwu’s camp has not been persuaded to commit his future to the Black Stars.

The youngster is reportedly focused on Belgium, leaving Ghana facing another difficult battle for the services of a highly rated player with Ghanaian roots.

Reports further indicate that Bisiwu’s father rejected the proposal from the Ghanaian side on behalf of the player. The development means the GFA’s reported assurances about his prospects with the senior national team have so far failed to change the family’s position.

Bisiwu’s decision would be a blow to Ghana’s efforts to attract young dual-national players who are developing in some of Europe’s biggest football systems.

The youngster has already built a strong football background in Belgium. He came through the Club Brugge system before moving to Barcelona, where he is now regarded as a player with significant potential.

His performances have also helped increase the attention surrounding him.

Bisiwu scored twice as Barcelona defeated FC Basel 5-2 on August 16, with his display further raising interest in his development in Spain.

For Ghana, the timing of the GFA’s interest is understandable.

The Black Stars have increasingly looked towards players with Ghanaian heritage who were born or raised abroad, particularly those developing in strong European football academies.

Bisiwu fits that profile perfectly. He has Ghanaian roots, but his football development has largely taken place in Belgium, where he has represented the national team at youth level.

Belgium is also reportedly aware of Ghana’s interest and is monitoring the situation closely. Reports indicate that the Belgian Football Association wants to retain the youngster within its national-team system.

At this stage, however, Bisiwu’s youth appearances for Belgium do not permanently tie him to the senior national team. FIFA’s eligibility rules allow players who meet the relevant conditions to change sporting nationality before becoming tied through senior competitive international appearances.

That means Ghana could still have a pathway to Bisiwu in the future, depending on his international career and the applicable FIFA regulations.

For now, though, the indications are that the youngster’s preference remains Belgium.

His situation also highlights the challenge facing the GFA as it competes with European football associations for talented players with Ghanaian heritage.

While Ghana can offer the opportunity to play for the Black Stars and potentially become an important part of the senior team, Belgium has been involved in Bisiwu’s development from his early years and has already given him international opportunities at youth level.

The next few years could therefore be important in determining where the Barcelona youngster eventually commits his senior international future.

For Ghanaian supporters, Bisiwu’s reported decision will be another reminder of the increasingly competitive race for dual-national talents.

The Black Stars have previously benefited from players with connections to Ghana who developed abroad, but convincing such players to choose Ghana over the countries where they were born and raised has often proved difficult.

Bisiwu’s case is still developing, and his senior international future has not been permanently settled. But for now, reports suggest that Belgium remains his preferred option despite Ghana’s efforts to change his mind.

With the young winger continuing his development at Barcelona, both Ghana and Belgium will likely keep a close eye on his progress.
