Ghana Gov’t Identifies 150 Schools for Free SHS Rehabilitati

The government has announced plans to rehabilitate 150 second-cycle institutions across the country as part of its efforts to strengthen the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.

Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu has reaffirmed the government's commitment to sustaining the Free SHS policy, announcing that 112 senior high schools (SHSs) and 38 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions have been selected for a major rehabilitation programme.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, July 20, Mr Iddrisu said the rehabilitation exercise would include the renovation of existing facilities and the expansion of infrastructure in beneficiary schools. "There will be a rehabilitation of 112 schools across the country. Thirty-eight TVET schools, so in all, 150 schools will benefit from our rehabilitation," he said.

The rehabilitation project aims to address critical infrastructure deficits and improve teaching and learning conditions in second-cycle institutions. Mr Iddrisu explained that the project would involve the construction and expansion of key facilities, including dormitories, classroom blocks, and science laboratories, to accommodate increasing enrolment and enhance the quality of education.

The government's intervention forms part of its broader strategy to strengthen the implementation of the Free SHS programme by improving infrastructure in second-cycle institutions. Mr Iddrisu noted that addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges remained critical to creating a conducive learning environment and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the flagship education policy.
