Joseph Nyarko, a 36-year-old HIV-positive Pragya rider, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison with hard labour by the Odumase Krobo Circuit Court for a sexual offence involving a 12-year-old girl in Somanya in the Eastern Region.
He was arrested on June 3, 2026, and later convicted after admitting during police investigations to having sexual intercourse with the victim in 2024.
This case brings to the fore the worrying trend of child defilement in our society, a menace that requires urgent attention from all stakeholders.
The case was reported on May 29, 2026, by the victim’s father, following information about an alleged incident involving another suspect, Derrick, who is currently on the run. The victim later confirmed the allegations to DOVVSU, and medical tests revealed she had contracted HIV.
The father of the victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, expressed relief that justice has been served, but also lamented the trauma his daughter has gone through.
The revelation that the perpetrator is HIV-positive raises concerns about the risk of HIV transmission to minors. According to the Ghana AIDS Commission, children under the age of 15 are particularly vulnerable to HIV infection due to their lack of awareness and the inability to negotiate safe sex.
This case highlights the need for increased awareness and education on HIV/AIDS, especially among children and adolescents.
