An 18-year-old US-based Ghanaian, Michael Sakyi Jr., has been shot dead in a car crash in Manassas, Virginia, leaving the Ghanaian community in the United States and back home in shock.
According to the Prince William County Police, officers responding to a reported car crash on Community Drive on June 25 found Sakyi in the driver’s seat of a vehicle that had collided with a parked car. He had sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police later arrested 21-year-old Jamal Dana Allen at his Manassas residence and charged him with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is being held without bond pending a court appearance.
Investigators said the shooting does not appear to have been random.
While the motive behind the shooting is still unclear, the incident has sent shockwaves through the Ghanaian community in the United States, with many expressing their condolences to Sakyi’s family.
The Ghanaian community in the United States has been growing rapidly in recent years, with many young Ghanaians pursuing higher education and career opportunities in the country. The community has been known to be close-knit, with many members supporting each other in times of need.
In this case, Sakyi’s aunt, Eva Acheampong, has launched a fundraising campaign to support his funeral expenses, describing him as an aspiring electrician whose death has left his family facing an unexpected financial burden.
As news of Sakyi’s death spreads, many in the Ghanaian community are left wondering how such a tragedy could have occurred. “This is a devastating loss for our community,” said a local Ghanaian leader. “We are all in shock and struggling to come to terms with the fact that such a young life has been lost in such a senseless act of violence.”
The incident has also raised concerns about the safety of Ghanaian youths living in the United States, with many calling for greater support and protection for the community.
Meanwhile, the police investigation into Sakyi’s death is ongoing, with detectives working to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
While the motive behind the shooting is still unclear, the incident has sent a stark reminder of the dangers of gun violence and the need for greater community engagement and support.
