Police Thwart Daring Bank Heist, Kill 2 Suspects

A brazen plot to rob three banks in Accra's Labone district was foiled on Thursday, August 13, 2026, after a shootout with police left two suspects dead and one in custody.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:45 a.m. when police received intelligence about a planned robbery attack on GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank, all located in the upscale neighborhood.

Police Deploy Rapid Response Team

The Ghana Police Service swiftly deployed its response team to the area after receiving the intelligence, where they spotted the suspected robbers in two vehicles parked close to the banks.

The police pursued the vehicle that sped off after the suspects spotted the officers, resulting in the arrest of Augustine Okechuku Maazi, one of its occupants.

Fatal Shootout Erupts

The occupants of the second vehicle attempted to flee while firing at the police, prompting the officers to return fire in a shootout that claimed the lives of two suspects.

A blow pistol was recovered from the scene, and two vehicles – a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS 7915-17 – were subsequently recovered.

Investigation Underway

Maazi is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations into the foiled robbery. The bodies of the two deceased suspects have been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy.

The Ghana Police Service commended the response team for successfully foiling the planned robbery and thanked members of the public for providing credible information on criminal activities.

The police response to the intelligence and swift action prevented what could have been a devastating attack on the banks and their customers.
