The Ghanaian film industry is about to witness a unique milestone as Nana Ama McBrown's upcoming movie, Ama, is set to premiere on Saturday, 15 August 2026. This is part of activities marking McBrown's 25th anniversary in Ghana's entertainment industry. The film, scripted and filmed entirely in Twi, marks a significant step towards preserving Ghana's local languages through cinema.
Speaking on Cruise Control with Mercury Quaye and Maame Adwoa Akotaah on Hitz FM, McBrown revealed that the decision to script and film the movie in Twi was intentional. The film's creative direction aimed to allow the story to be told authentically in Ghana's local language.
A Story of Self-Discovery
The movie Ama centres on a young girl with dreams and aspirations of her own, whose parents attempt to impose their decisions on her instead of guiding her. McBrown explained that the story explores themes including forced marriage, honesty, tradition, parental guidance, and the laws of the country, presenting issues that remain relevant to Ghanaian society. The film features predominantly new actors, with McBrown and actor-comedian Dr Likee being the only established faces in the cast.
McBrown's desire to create opportunities for emerging actors was inspired by the opportunity she received at the beginning of her own career. In 2001, Miracle Films gave her a chance that helped launch her career in the Ghanaian film industry. McBrown recalled that moment with gratitude and a sense of responsibility to pay it forward.
