Accra-Tema Motorway reconstruction 48% complete with drainage works reducing flooding

The Accra-Tema Motorway reconstruction project is now 48% complete, with major drainage infrastructure in place to reduce flooding along the corridor. According to road construction consultant Ing. Kwabena Bempong, work on the urban highway is currently underway, which will function as a service road alongside the main motorway. This significant development comes as the country grapples with recent flooding in parts of the country, which claimed lives, displaced residents, and submerged homes.

The project, which involves the construction of about 20 culverts and three interchanges, has seen most of those structures nearing completion. Ing. Bempong explained that a significant portion of the project has centred on drainage infrastructure and interchange construction to address the perennial flooding that has affected sections of the motorway. "The challenges we have had mainly were the various diversions around the interchanges and the drainage structures," he said.

In response to the recent flooding, President John Dramani Mahama directed a nationwide clean-up exercise, which took place on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11. The exercise brought together the President, government officials, and members of the public to desilt drains, clear choked gutters, and clean streets in flood-affected communities as part of efforts to improve sanitation and reduce the risk of future flooding. While the clean-up exercise was a much-needed initiative, the reconstruction of the Accra-Tema Motorway offers a long-term solution to the flooding woes that have plagued the country.

The focus on drainage infrastructure has been a major priority for the project, with Ing. Bempong stating that contractors have prioritised keeping the motorway open to traffic while construction continues. "We make sure the road is passable throughout the period of construction," he stated. This approach has ensured that the motorway remains operational, despite the ongoing construction work. The project's progress is a welcome development, especially as the country continues to experience the effects of heavy rainfall and flooding.

As the reconstruction project continues to make strides, it remains to be seen when the project will be completed. However, with the current pace of work, it is clear that the Accra-Tema Motorway will be transformed into a more efficient and flood-resistant corridor. The success of this project will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the country's transportation infrastructure, and it is essential that the project is completed on schedule to meet the needs of the growing population.
