Government Clears Billions in Arrears for Struggling Road Contractors

The Government has paid out a staggering GH¢23.1 billion to clear road contractors' arrears and fund projects under the Big Push infrastructure programme as of the end of July. This revelation was made by Mr Kwami Governs Agbodza, the Minister of Roads and Highways, during President John Dramani Mahama's inspection of the Navrongo-Chuchuliga-Tumu Road project.

Billions in Arrears Cleared

Mr Agbodza said that the bulk of the amount paid was indeed arrears, and that President Mahama would be on record as the President who paid the largest portion of arrears under any government in their history. The Minister emphasized that President Mahama was not only continuing projects he inherited, but was also undertaking new ones.

President Mahama's Infrastructure Push

Mr Agbodza reiterated that in every constituency and every district, issues of roads were being addressed, and that in the coming months, many of the roads that people have been concerned about would receive attention, with contractors returning to the site to commence work. He expressed confidence that the Contractor, MyTurn, would finish the Navrongo-Chuchuliga-Tumu road ahead of schedule.

Regional Connectivity

The Navrongo-Chuchuliga-Tumu road links Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional Capital, to Wa, the Upper West Regional Capital. Mr Agbodza highlighted the importance of this road in connecting the two regions, and the need to address issues that were previously hampering its completion.

Future Road Projects

Mr Agbodza expressed confidence that with the payment of arrears and the commencement of new projects, many of the issues that were previously hindering road construction would be addressed. He noted that the Contractor, MyTurn, would be returning to the site to commence work on the Navrongo-Chuchuliga-Tumu road, and that many other roads in the region would also be receiving attention in the coming months.
