A 17-year-old girl was stabbed to death in a brutal sword attack at Brinell School in Fagersta, Sweden, on Friday afternoon, police have confirmed. Two other students, a 12-year-old boy and another 17-year-old boy, were also seriously injured in the attack.
Deadly Sword Attack Rocks Swedish School
The incident unfolded just as students were returning to the classroom following the summer break. Brinell School, which has around 500 students, is located about 170km northwest of Stockholm, the Swedish capital. The school's location in central Sweden makes the attack all the more shocking.
Local authorities confirmed that a third person sustained minor injuries in the attack. An 18-year-old man, who has not been named, was arrested in connection with the incident. Police are treating the case as murder and attempted murder.
Emergency Declared, Suspect Detained
After being called to the scene, police fired shots, but it is unclear whether the alleged attacker was hit before being detained. The suspect was reportedly wearing a helmet at the time of his arrest. Investigators have carried out two house searches in connection with the suspect, police said.
Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson visited the school on Saturday morning, where they paid their respects to the victims. The Swedish Prime Minister described the attack as a "serious incident," saying, "we do not know what lies behind the act, but we know that police are working very intensively."
Community in Shock, Investigation Underway
The region went into a state of emergency on Friday, but it had ended by Saturday. King Carl XVI Gustaf expressed his sadness over the news, saying he received it "with dismay and sadness." The school community is in shock, with students and staff struggling to come to terms with the tragic events.
The investigation into the attack is ongoing, with police working to piece together the events surrounding the deadly sword attack. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and police are working intensively to determine what led to the tragic events. The school will likely be closed for the foreseeable future as the investigation continues.
