NPP 2026 elections: Nomination window ends with 50 aspirants in race for nine positions

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially closed the nomination window for its 2026 National Officers Elections, with a total of 50 aspirants purchasing or collecting forms to contest nine national positions.

50 Aspirants in the Fray: A Look at the Numbers

The National Officers Elections Committee (NOEC) announced the closure in a statement on Saturday, August 22, describing the nomination exercise as successful and peaceful. The close of nominations marks the end of the first phase of the party's internal election process, with attention now shifting to the filing of completed nomination forms.

The National Vice Chairperson position attracted the highest number of aspirants, with 13 people picking forms, followed by the National Organiser position with eight. Six aspirants picked forms for the National Youth Organiser position, while five each are seeking to become National Chairperson and National Nasara Organiser. The positions of General Secretary and National Treasurer attracted four aspirants each, while three people picked forms for National Women Organiser. The National Communications Director position has two aspirants.

Filing Opens Sunday: Next Stage in the Election Process

The filing of completed nomination forms will begin on Sunday, August 23, 2026, and close on Saturday, August 29, 2026. NOEC said arrangements have been put in place for the orderly receipt, registration, and secure custody of all nominations.

Vetting to Follow: A Crucial Stage in the Election Process

After filing closes, the nominees will undergo vetting from Monday, August 31 to Thursday, September 3, 2026. The vetting schedule will see presidential aspirants for the National Chairperson, General Secretary, and National Treasurer positions vetted on Monday. National Vice Chairperson aspirants will be vetted on Tuesday, followed by National Organiser and National Youth Organiser aspirants on Wednesday. The final day, Thursday, will be dedicated to the National Communications Director, National Nasara Organiser, and National Women Organiser positions.

Balloting Date to Be Announced Later

NOEC has also explained why it has not announced a date for balloting. The Committee said the decision is deliberate, arguing that it is necessary to complete the filing, vetting, and possible appeals processes before fixing a final date for the election. It said the final list of candidates can only be determined after the vetting process and the resolution of any appeals. Fixing a balloting date prematurely could therefore result in its postponement or suspension should an unresolved appeal affect the list of candidates for any position.

The Committee said it will announce a firm balloting date once the field of candidates has been sufficiently settled and assured aspirants that they will receive adequate notice of the date, venue, time, and procedures. It pledged to conduct the balloting process transparently and fairly. It urged aspirants and their supporters to maintain unity, mutual respect, and confidence in the party's internal democratic processes as the elections move into the filing, vetting, and appeals stages.

The nomination process for the NPP's 2026 National Officers Elections has been completed, but the real action is only just beginning. The filing of completed nomination forms will open on Sunday, and the vetting process will follow shortly after. The outcome of the election will have significant implications for the party and the country, and it will be closely watched by all interested parties.
