GRIDCo Warns of 15-Hour Power Outage in Accra on Sunday

Residents in several communities across Accra can expect a 15-hour power outage on Sunday, August 23, as the Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) carries out emergency works to replace a damaged transmission tower.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Accra West Region, has issued a public notice informing customers of the planned outage, citing damage to critical transmission infrastructure as the reason behind the intervention.

Critical Transmission Infrastructure Damaged in Fuel Tanker Explosion

The damage occurred when a fuel tanker exploded while welding work was being carried out on the tank inside the transmission line's Right-of-Way (RoW). The explosion compromised a key component of the high-voltage transmission network, making immediate replacement work necessary.

GRIDCo will begin the emergency exercise at 3:00 a.m. on Sunday and expects the work to be completed by 6:00 p.m.

Affected Communities Face Longest Power Outage in Months

Two groups of communities across the capital have been identified as falling within the affected zones. Households, businesses, markets, offices, and other electricity consumers in those areas should expect no power supply throughout the duration of the works.

The ECG has urged the public to take note of the planned interruption and make the necessary arrangements ahead of the scheduled window.

GRIDCo's Emergency Works to Affect Thousands of Residents

The power outage is expected to last for up to 15 hours, covering a window during which affected areas will be without electricity. The ECG notice warns that households, businesses, markets, offices, and other electricity consumers in the affected areas should expect no power supply throughout the duration of the works.

Residents in the affected communities are advised to make alternative arrangements for power supply during the planned outage.

The power outage is a significant disruption to daily life in Accra, particularly for those who rely on electricity for work, education, and healthcare.

What Happens Next?

The power outage is expected to have a significant impact on the daily lives of residents in the affected communities. While GRIDCo works to repair the damaged transmission tower, residents will have to rely on alternative sources of power or make adjustments to their daily routines. The power outage is a reminder of the importance of maintaining critical infrastructure and the need for emergency preparedness in the face of unexpected disruptions.
