Paul Afoko, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Chairman hopeful, has revealed he remained loyal to the party despite his indefinite suspension in 2015. In a press conference held on Tuesday, July 14, Mr Afoko outlined his vision ahead of the party’s National Chairman race, emphasizing his commitment to the NPP throughout the tumultuous period.

The NPP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) suspended Mr Afoko indefinitely in October 2015, following a prolonged leadership crisis within the party. He was accused of bringing the party into disrepute, failing to cooperate with fellow national executives, disregarding party structures and decisions, and engaging in conduct considered detrimental to the party’s unity and electoral fortunes. His suspension followed a recommendation by the party’s Disciplinary Committee, which found that he had breached provisions of the NPP Constitution.

Mr Afoko, however, insists he never abandoned the NPP. Despite being unable to complete his tenure as National Chairman, he continued to support the party’s candidates and structures. In fact, he claims to have maintained a strong belief in the party’s values and future, even after his suspension. “I did not complete my term; that is a matter known to all. But I never abandoned the NPP. Even after my suspension, I continued to support candidates and constituencies. I continued to believe in this party. I continued to hope for its renewal,” he said.

The leadership crisis that led to Mr Afoko’s suspension was further complicated by the May 2015 acid attack that claimed the life of the party’s Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama. Mr Afoko’s younger brother, Gregory Afoko, was subsequently arrested and later convicted in connection with the murder. However, Paul Afoko was never accused of any involvement in the case.

Now, Mr Afoko is seeking to return as National Chairman, campaigning on a platform of reconciliation, unity, and rebuilding the party’s grassroots structures. He believes his continued involvement in the party during his suspension reflects his enduring commitment to its values and future. “Today, I say with humility that what we started then, we can do again and do it better. The NPP must return to power. The NPP must return power to its structures,” he emphasized.

Mr Afoko’s decision to seek the National Chairman position comes as the party prepares for its internal elections. His campaign is likely to be closely watched, given the sensitive nature of the party’s internal dynamics. While some may view his suspension as a stain on his leadership, Mr Afoko’s unwavering commitment to the NPP is a testament to his dedication to the party’s cause. As the party navigates its internal challenges, one thing is clear: Paul Afoko’s loyalty to the NPP will be a central theme in the National Chairman race.
