Lionel Messi was fined by Major League Soccer after a confrontation with Philadelphia Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan during Inter Miami's 2-2 draw at Subaru Park on August 19.
Confrontation on the Pitch
The 39-year-old was punished for striking Sullivan around the back of the head late in the match. According to reports, Messi appeared to react after claiming the 22-year-old had elbowed him immediately after he played the ball.
Sullivan responded angrily before the referee stepped in to separate the players. MLS confirmed Messi's fine but did not disclose the amount.
Previous Disciplinary Issues
This is the second time the Inter Miami captain has been sanctioned financially by the league since joining the club in 2023. In February 2025, Messi was fined for grabbing New York City FC assistant coach Mehdi Ballouchy around the neck following a heated exchange.
League Response
Messi's latest disciplinary issue also comes as Inter Miami currently sit second in the Eastern Conference, seven points behind leaders Nashville. The latest punishment follows a series of incidents connected to the 2026 World Cup, with FIFA announcing a series of sanctions against Argentina earlier this week.
Impact on Messi's Career
For a player more accustomed to making headlines with his feet, Messi's latest MLS appearance has instead placed his conduct under the spotlight. The latest fine adds to the pressure on the 39-year-old as he continues to play for Inter Miami.
Miami's Yannick Bright and Philadelphia's Cavan Sullivan were both dismissed during stoppage time, although Cavan's one-match suspension was later overturned following a league review. Away from the drama, Messi still made his mark on the scoresheet, scoring Miami's second goal of the night. It was his first goal since the death of his father.
