Kevin Keegan, the former England captain and two-time Ballon d'Or winner, has died at the age of 75 after a battle with cancer, his family has announced.
Keegan's family described him as a "much-loved husband, father and grandfather" in a statement. He rose to prominence after joining Liverpool in 1971 under manager Bill Shankly. During his time at Anfield, he won three First Division titles, the FA Cup, two UEFA Cups, and the European Cup in 1977, scoring 100 goals in 323 appearances.
Keegan later moved to Hamburg, where he won the Bundesliga and was named European Footballer of the Year, now known as the Ballon d'Or, in 1978 and 1979. He earned 63 caps for England, scoring 21 goals, and captained the national team.
After retiring as a player, Keegan moved into management, guiding Newcastle to promotion to the Premier League and coming close to winning the 1995/96 league title. He also managed England, Manchester City, and Fulham.
Liverpool, Hamburg, and Newcastle were among the clubs to pay tribute to Keegan following news of his death. His legacy as a football legend will be remembered for generations to come.
