Ghana Declines South Africa

Ghana has announced plans to conduct an independent autopsy on the body of Bashiru Isak, a Ghanaian national fatally shot multiple times in Khayelitsha, a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa.

Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in a Facebook post that the deceased was indeed Isak, a law-abiding father of three, contradicting early denials made by some South African officials. The ministry stated that the identification was confirmed on July 16, 2026.

Isak’s remains were repatriated to Ghana on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, arriving at 6:40 pm.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and members of the bereaved family received the body at the airport, which was then deposited at the 37 Military Hospital.

Ghana’s government renewed its call for swift justice, demanding expedited investigations, arrests, and prosecution in connection with the killing, which it linked to the current wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

Ghana Declines South Africa

The Ghanaian government’s move comes after authorities in South Africa reportedly failed to provide an autopsy report to Isak’s family or Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the autopsy report is essential to understanding the circumstances surrounding Isak’s death. The ministry also noted that after the independent autopsy is completed, Isak will be buried in accordance with Islamic customs.

The case has sparked a range of reactions from users across Ghana and South Africa, with the Ministry’s Facebook post drawing a range of responses. The Ghanaian government’s efforts to secure justice for Isak and his family highlight the complex issues surrounding xenophobic attacks in South Africa. As Ghana continues to push for answers, the international community is watching closely.

The independent autopsy will provide much-needed clarity on the circumstances surrounding Isak’s death, and the Ghanaian government’s efforts to secure justice for him and his family will be closely watched by the international community.
