Ghana Police Service Returns Lost GH¢85,000 to Owner in Techiman

Ghana Police Service

The Bono East Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has handed over a bag containing GH¢85,000 to its rightful owner after it was found lying by the roadside along the Techiman–Kumasi Highway.

According to the police, the incident happened in the early hours of February 14, 2026, around 4:20 a.m. Officers on duty at a snap check point noticed a bag that appeared to have fallen from a moving vehicle. It was just there, by the roadside.

The bag had the name “Ofori” and a phone number boldly written on it.

Inspector George Appiah and three other officers retrieved the bag and upon inspection, discovered it contained a large sum of money. Instead of ignoring it or taking chances, they forwarded it to the Regional Command for proper investigation and verification.

When the number on the bag was contacted, a 53-year-old businessman from Ashtown in Kumasi, who identified himself as Stephen Ofori, responded. He later showed up to claim ownership.

Mr. Ofori explained that the money had been withdrawn from GCB Bank in Wa and was being transported to Kumasi in a commercial vehicle when it accidentally fell off.

The police verified the amount in his presence and confirmed it was indeed GH¢85,000. After thorough checks and satisfactory explanation, the full amount was handed back to him.

In a time where many people might be tempted, the officers chose integrity.

The Police Command has since commended both the officers involved and members of the public who drew attention to the bag. It’s one of those stories that reminds us that not all news is bad news.

Somewhere in Techiman, a businessman is grateful. And somewhere in Bono East, a few officers have quietly restored faith in public service.
