Iran confirms only 1 African country eligible for visa waiver programme in 2026

Iran has confirmed that Egypt is the only African country whose citizens qualify for its visa waiver programme, placing the North African nation on a list of just ten countries worldwide that are exempt from the standard visa process.

The information comes from Iran's official electronic visa portal, managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to Legit.ng. The portal sets out which foreign nationals may enter the country without going through conventional application procedures.

Egypt sits alongside nine other nations on the waiver list. They are Azerbaijan, Turkey, Syria, Georgia, Armenia, China, Iraq, Oman, and Kazakhstan.

Citizens of these countries are covered by internal laws, formal approvals, and bilateral agreements. Those arrangements let them skip the usual visa requirements before travelling to Iran.

A separate category applies to nationals of Lebanon, Venezuela, and Malaysia. They are allowed to obtain entry permits on arrival at designated entry points, subject to specific conditions.

For nationalities not covered by either arrangement, Iran runs an online visa application portal through which travellers can apply ahead of their trip.

Citizens of certain countries cannot use the digital platform. They are required to apply in person at the nearest Iranian embassy instead.

Iran's foreign ministry also says some nationals may be ineligible for a visa altogether because of political and diplomatic considerations. Those individuals are advised to contact their nearest Iranian embassy for guidance.

For most African nations, Egypt's spot on the waiver list is the exception. Citizens of countries such as Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya do not appear in any of Iran's exemption categories.

That means travellers from those countries must complete the standard online application or, depending on their nationality, visit an Iranian embassy in person to secure entry permission.

Egypt's inclusion reflects the longstanding diplomatic and bilateral ties between Cairo and Tehran. Those ties have developed over the years into formal travel arrangements that have not been extended to most other countries on the continent.

The visa waiver list gives Egyptian passport holders a level of access to Iran that few travellers from outside the region enjoy. It also sets Egypt apart from its neighbours across Africa, where visa requirements remain the norm for entry to the Islamic Republic.

Iran's system splits travellers into clear groups. Those with full waivers, those eligible for visa on arrival, those who can apply online, and those required to apply through an embassy.

The final group, made up of nationals deemed ineligible on political grounds, has no online route at all and must deal directly with Iranian missions abroad.

Elsewhere on the continent, some governments have moved in the opposite direction on entry rules. Rwanda confirmed that it grants visas on arrival to citizens of every country in the world, according to an earlier report by YEN.com.gh.

The Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration in Rwanda released details of the framework, which has been in operation since 1 January 2018.

Under the Rwandan system, no traveller is required to apply for a visa
