Dennis Miracles Aboagye Arrested by EOCO

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and an aspirant for the National Communications Director position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been arrested and detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). The arrest occurred at the Accra International Airport on Sunday, July 12, with the help of immigration officials.

The NPP has reacted swiftly to the arrest, calling for the immediate release of Aboagye. In a statement issued by the party's General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, the NPP alleged that Aboagye had been denied access to his lawyers and that his whereabouts had not been disclosed. The party also claimed that no charges had been brought against him since his arrest. The NPP has therefore called on EOCO to either release Aboagye immediately or arraign him before a court in line with the Constitution. "That EOCO release Dennis Miracles Aboagye immediately, or charge him and put him before a court of competent jurisdiction as the Constitution requires," the statement read in part.

The NPP has accused the government of using state institutions to target members of the opposition, insisting that the arrest was intended to intimidate one of its outspoken figures. "Let us be clear about what this is. It is not law enforcement. It is intimidation," the statement noted. The party further demanded that Aboagye be granted unrestricted access to his lawyers and family without further delay, arguing that his constitutional rights must be respected.

The arrest of Aboagye has sparked controversy in Ghana's political landscape. The NPP has long accused the government of using state institutions to target its members. The government, on the other hand, has denied any wrongdoing. This latest development is likely to fuel the ongoing debate about the use of state power in Ghana's politics. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the government and EOCO will respond to the NPP's demands.

The fate of Dennis Miracles Aboagye remains uncertain, and it is unclear what charges, if any, he will face. The NPP has vowed to continue to fight for his release, and the situation is likely to remain a major talking point in Ghana's political discourse for the coming days.
