A 25-year-old man has been convicted by a court in Ghana after pleading guilty to stealing a four-year-old boy from a village in the Volta Region.

David Kpandoyo, a Togolese national, was convicted on his own plea by the Adentan Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs Angela Attachie.

According to the prosecution, the child disappeared from Kpedze on July 1, 2026.

Two days later, a resident found him wandering at New Legon in Accra and reported the matter to the police. Kpandoyo came forward and claimed the child was his son, but police asked him to provide proof of the claim.

However, he was unable to produce the child’s birth certificate or lead officers to the child’s mother.

Kpandoyo’s confession revealed that he had been drinking when the child approached him. He told the court that he gave the boy some money, took him home, and could not remember what happened afterwards because he was intoxicated.

The child’s mother was eventually contacted through a missing person’s flyer, and she confirmed that she did not know Kpandoyo. Investigations later revealed that Kpandoyo had taken the child from Kpedze while working there and brought him to Accra.

Kpandoyo’s actions sparked a community-wide search for the missing child, with residents making announcements and sharing information with the police. His eventual confession and admission of guilt have brought some relief to the community. However, the incident raises concerns about child safety and the need for increased vigilance in communities.

The court has adjourned sentencing to July 14, 2026. The outcome will determine the severity of Kpandoyo’s punishment, but one thing is clear: the child’s ordeal has come to an end.

The community can now focus on healing and supporting the child and his family as they move forward.
