Multiple children have been injured after a tree fell at an outdoor activity centre in Surrey, with one youngster airlifted to hospital with a serious leg injury.
The incident occurred at the PGL Activity Centre on Tilford Road in Hindhead on Monday afternoon, with emergency services called to the scene at 1.40pm. According to reports, one patient was airlifted to a London hospital with a serious leg injury, while six others were taken to Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford with less serious injuries. Eleven people were treated at the scene before being discharged.
PGL's main activity centre in Hindhead sits within 45 acres of woodland and is frequently used by schools, youth groups, and holiday camps. The centre offers a range of activities, including climbing, zip-lining, archery, and water sports. The incident has raised questions over the safety of such centres, particularly in areas with large wooded areas.
The incident comes just over a year after a similar tragedy in Chalkwell Park in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, where a seven-year-old girl was killed when a tree partially collapsed. That incident sparked a police investigation and raised questions over the condition of the tree after reports it had been supported by metal props. Gregory Stafford, the MP for Farnham and Bordon, has expressed his condolences to the families affected by the recent incident, stating that his thoughts are with 'the children involved, their families and all those affected'.
The swift response of emergency services in Surrey has been praised, with the Isle of Wight Air Ambulance confirming that one patient had been airlifted to hospital after receiving treatment at the centre. The air ambulance team of a doctor and two advanced paramedics were deployed to the incident at 1.55pm. Surrey Police was alerted just before 2pm that a number of people had been injured after a tree came down at an activity centre in Hindhead. The police, along with partners from Surrey Fire & Rescue and the South East Coast Ambulance Service, attended the scene.
The incident has resulted in a number of injuries, although thankfully, no reported fatalities. The safety and wellbeing of children, their teachers, and staff at such centres is a priority for parents and guardians in Ghana and around the world. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of regular tree maintenance and safety checks at outdoor activity centres.
