Annette Bening is stepping into her mob boss era in the new Apple TV miniseries "Lucky." The 68-year-old Oscar-nominated actress plays the role of Priscilla Matheson, a criminal kingpin, in the series that premieres on July 15.

Bening's decision to take on the role of a mob boss is a continuation of her crime streak, which began with her portrayal of a drug-trafficking rancher in the series "Dutton Ranch." In an exclusive interview with The Post, Bening explained that she is enjoying the opportunity to play complex women who defy stereotypes. "It's a joy to explore playing a woman who says, 'OK – if you don't like me, I don't have a problem with that,'" she said.

The series, based on a novel of the same name, follows a grifter, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, on the run from a mob boss, played by Bening, after a botched heist with her husband, Drew Starkey. The Apple TV miniseries was created by Jonathan Tropper and produced by Reese Witherspoon, and also stars Timothy Olyphant as Taylor-Joy's father.

Bening's preparation for the role of Priscilla involved understanding her character on an emotional level. "I do not think about it," she said. "I do the opposite of thinking, if I can." This approach allowed her to tap into Priscilla's emotional state and bring the character to life. Bening also noted that Priscilla is not an example of how people should live their lives, citing her character's unhealthy emotional state as a key factor in her complexity.

In addition to her portrayal of Priscilla, Bening also enjoys the action sequences in the series, which include shootouts and car chases. While some of the car chase scenes were pretend, Bening and the cast did participate in some of the racing scenes, which she described as "really liberating." Bening has been married to Warren Beatty since 1992 and the couple has been in several movies together, including "Bugsy" and "Rules Don't Apply." Bening also mentioned that she would be open to working with her husband on a TV show in the future.

"Lucky" premieres on Apple TV on July 15, with new episodes out on Wednesdays. The series is a continuation of Bening's crime streak, and her portrayal of Priscilla Matheson is sure to captivate audiences. With her extensive experience in the industry, Bening is well-equipped to bring this complex character to life, and fans of the series are eagerly awaiting the premiere.
