In a significant move, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, under the provisions of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) as amended by the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940), has revoked the appointments of all Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
This directive, effective January 8, 2025, also includes the revocation of Assembly Members appointed pursuant to the relevant sections of the Act.
The decision, as communicated through a letter from the Office of the President, directs Coordinating Directors of the affected MMDAs to assume interim responsibilities as acting Chief Executives until substantive appointments are made.
This development marks a significant restructuring within local governance, aimed at ensuring the efficient functioning of the assemblies. While the reasons for the revocation were not explicitly stated, it is expected to pave the way for the realignment of local governance structures.
