A female deputy sheriff in the United States has been arrested and charged with battery and assault for allegedly groping an inmate’s breast at a San Francisco jail.

Nanette Musto, 51, a deputy with the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office, is accused of committing the act on Sunday while on duty at San Francisco County Jail #2.

According to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, Musto allegedly approached a female inmate and asked her if she had surgically augmented her body. After the inmate answered, Musto allegedly reached out and touched the inmate’s breast without permission or lawful necessity. The alleged incident was captured on jail surveillance footage, prosecutors said.

This latest incident is part of a growing concern about sexual misconduct by law enforcement officials in San Francisco. In May, a group of women prisoners sued the sheriff’s office, alleging that deputies strip-searched them and recorded the act with their body-worn cameras, in violation of a written policy forbidding their use in such a setting.

Last fall, the sheriff’s office fired a 33-year-old deputy over allegations of sexually assaulting a transgender inmate.

The case against Musto is still an active investigation by San Francisco’s Department of Police Accountability, as well as the District Attorney’s Office. She faces charges of battery and assault and may be punished by up to six months in jail.

Musto was arrested and released on $3,000 bail. She is due back in court on Tuesday to enter her plea.

The alleged incident has sparked concerns about the treatment of inmates in San Francisco’s jails and the need for greater accountability among law enforcement officials.

The San Francisco Sheriff’s Office has a responsibility to ensure that its deputies behave professionally and respect the rights of all individuals in their care. The outcome of this case will be closely watched by advocates for prisoners’ rights and the broader community.
