ECG Upgrade Spending Faces Scrutiny Over Reliability

ECG’s GH¢200m upgrade spending must translate into reliable power – IES

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has spent approximately GH¢200 million on system upgrades and maintenance, but recent power outages have raised questions about the reliability of the electricity supply. The latest nationwide blackout was attributed to a fault on the Akosombo transmission line.

ECG's Upgrade Spending Faces Scrutiny

Research & Energy Security Analyst at the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Smith Boahene, said the recent power disruptions have cast doubt on the resilience of Ghana's electricity infrastructure and the effectiveness of ongoing maintenance efforts. "The recurrence of such incidents at different points in the electricity value chain—generation, transmission, and distribution—warrants a critical assessment of the system," he said.

The IES is advocating for an investigation into the two recent national outages to identify the underlying problems and prevent a recurrence. According to Smith Boahene, deferred maintenance, underinvestment, and equipment obsolescence are possible factors contributing to the challenges in the power sector.

Power Disruptions and the Need for Transparency

The recent power outages have highlighted the need for transparency in the power sector. Smith Boahene emphasized that ECG's investment in system upgrades and maintenance must ultimately translate into improved reliability of power supply. "If the system operator does not come out with exactly what the challenges have been in the sector in the last four to six weeks or so, it will be difficult for us to also follow along how the development in the grid operation has been," he said.

The IES is calling for a thorough investigation into the recent power outages to identify the root causes and prevent future disruptions. This investigation would provide valuable insights into the challenges facing the power sector and help to address them effectively.

What's Next for ECG and the Power Sector

The ECG's spending on system upgrades and maintenance has been seen as a step in the right direction to improve the reliability of power supply. However, the recent power outages have raised questions about the effectiveness of these efforts. An investigation into the recent power outages would provide a clearer understanding of the challenges facing the power sector and help to identify solutions to address them. As the IES continues to advocate for transparency and accountability in the power sector, it remains to be seen how ECG and the government will respond to these calls.
