Central Region NPP Secretary Dares Mahama to Prosecute NDC Officials Involved in Galamsey

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, has been sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment with hard labour after being found guilty on all counts in a case related to illegal mining activities.

In a statement, the Central Region NPP Secretary, Richard Takyi-Mensah, condemned the sentencing of Chairman Wontumi, saying the NDC government was not being fair to the NPP. He added that many NDC officials were also involved in illegal mining and should be prosecuted.

The NDC had promised Ghanaians during the campaign that it would eliminate galamsey, but NDC officials are now deeply involved in the illegal mining business, Mr. Takyi-Mensah alleged.

Mr. Takyi-Mensah also accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of using the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) to promote illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, despite campaigning on a promise to eradicate the practice.

The NPP has evidence that some NDC stakeholders, including some constituency chairmen, were involved in illegal mining, Mr. Takyi-Mensah claimed.

The government led by President John Dramani Mahama has been criticized for its performance across several sectors, with Mr. Takyi-Mensah arguing that it had resorted to intimidating and silencing NPP activists.

The NPP Secretary called on all NPP members to unite and work towards a strong campaign ahead of the 2028 general election to return the party to power.

In related news, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had earlier pardoned eight students of Chiana Senior High School who were dismissed for insulting him.
