The United States has issued a reminder to travelers, including Ghanaians, that bushmeat such as akrantie and other wild game is prohibited from being brought into the country.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), travelers returning from trips abroad should carefully check the list of restricted items before boarding flights to the United States.
The agency explained that bushmeat is banned because it may pose serious health risks and could introduce diseases that threaten public health and agriculture.
The warning is particularly relevant to many Ghanaians and other Africans living abroad who often travel with local delicacies and food items from home.
Authorities stressed that prohibited items discovered during inspections can be confiscated, while travelers may also face penalties for violating import regulations.
The announcement has sparked conversations online, with many social media users reminding friends and family abroad to be aware of U.S. customs laws before traveling.
Officials continue to encourage travelers to review the restricted items list to avoid delays, fines or other complications at U.S. ports of entry.
