A toilet tissue dealer at Kantamanto market has expressed profound sorrow after losing goods valued at approximately $180,000 to the devastating fire that engulfed parts of the market.
The incident, which occurred on the dawn of 2nd January, 2025, has left many traders devastated, with livelihoods destroyed in its wake.
When speaking with reporters, the distraught trader was on a video call with his business partner in China, trying to explain the extent of the damage.
“This is my life’s work gone in a single night,” he lamented, visibly shaken by the loss of his entire stock of goods stored in a warehouse within the market.
The fire, which broke out on 2nd January, caused massive destruction, reducing several shops and warehouses to ashes. Traders have reported heavy financial losses, with many unsure of how to recover.
Local authorities are investigating the cause of the fire while firefighters have been commended for their efforts to contain the blaze. However, traders are calling for better safety measures to prevent future disasters.
The Kantamanto fire has reignited concerns over fire management in major markets, with community leaders urging swift action to support affected traders and ensure such tragedies are avoided in the future.
