Suicide is a heavy, deep and troubling topic, but today, a South African footballer who played in the World Cup took his own life when he returned home to South Africa, and a Ghanaian man, admired and loved by many, also allegedly recently took his life. According to statistics, more than 720,000 people die by suicide every year worldwide.
The Hidden Struggle
When a person attempts to take their own life, the pain and desperation that drives them to such an extreme act can be overwhelming. For one woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, her attempt was a desperate cry for help, a result of a deep emotional pain and self-harm associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD).
She shared her story, revealing the devastating effects of rejection, abandonment, and conflict on her mental health. At the time, she was in a relationship that had ended, and her ex-partner's rejection left her feeling worthless and alone. The pain was so intense that she considered taking her own life, and in a moment of desperation, she attempted to end her life by slicing her wrist.
Statistics Reveal the Alarming Reality
The numbers are staggering: more than 720,000 people die by suicide every year worldwide. This translates to approximately 1,970 deaths every day, 82 deaths every hour, and one death every 43 seconds. Suicide accounts for more than 1 in every 100 deaths globally, with around 73% of suicides occurring in low- and middle-income countries. For every person who dies by suicide, more than 20 other adults are estimated to attempt suicide.
The Connection Between BPD and Suicide
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with a genuinely elevated risk of suicidal thoughts, attempts, and death. A 2025 meta-analysis involving 35 studies and more than 34,000 people with BPD estimated lifetime rates of approximately 80% for suicidal thoughts, 52% for suicide attempts, and 6% for death by suicide. The connection between BPD and suicide is not simply that people with BPD are "impulsive." Several features can converge during a crisis, including extraordinary intense emotions, rejection, abandonment, conflict, or perceived humiliation, thinking that may become rigid, and impulsivity that shortens the interval between suicidal thoughts and action.
A Story of Survival
The woman who shared her story is a survivor of a suicide attempt, and her experience highlights the complexities of BPD and the devastating effects of rejection and abandonment. She attempted to end her life at the age of 22, after being rejected by her ex-partner. Her roommate discovered her and helped her through the crisis, but the experience left her with a deep emotional scar. To this day, she still carries the physical reminder of that painful moment, a small line on her wrist that serves as a painful reminder of the pain she endured.
The statistics are clear: suicide is a global health crisis that demands attention and action. By sharing stories like this one, we can begin to understand the complexities of BPD and the devastating effects of rejection and abandonment on mental health. As we continue to grapple with this issue, it is essential that we prioritize support for those who are struggling, providing them with the resources and care they need to heal and move forward.
