Power Cuts Loom for Thousands in Greater Accra

Some parts of the Greater Accra Region will experience temporary interruptions in power supply this weekend as restoration and planned maintenance works are carried out on the damaged Tema–Achimota 161kV transmission line. The disruptions are a result of a recent explosion involving a fuel tanker that damaged the transmission line.

Transmission Line Damage Triggers Power Cuts

The transmission line was damaged near Ashaiman Middle East after a fuel tanker undergoing welding works beneath the line exploded, sending part of the tanker more than 300 metres into a transmission tower and compromising its structural integrity. This accident has brought the power supply in the affected areas to a halt, leaving thousands of residents without electricity.

Authorities Appeal for Patience

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, said the planned maintenance would take a few hours and was necessary to facilitate the restoration works safely. "These interruptions will be necessary to facilitate the works and ensure the safety and reliability of the transmission system," Dr Jinapor said, appealing to residents to bear with the authorities.

Warning Against Transmission Corridor Encroachment

Dr Jinapor also reiterated the need for the public to keep away from protected transmission corridors, warning that encroachment and unauthorised activities could endanger lives and damage critical infrastructure. "We must protect these critical transmission corridors to safeguard lives, property and the reliability of Ghana's power supply," he added, highlighting the importance of keeping a safe distance from these areas.

Residents to Bear with Disruptions

Dr Jinapor stressed that the temporary power interruptions would support efforts to restore the safety and reliability of the transmission system. As the region prepares for the weekend, residents in the affected areas are advised to be prepared for power cuts and to follow the instructions of the authorities to ensure their safety.

What's Next for Power Supply Restoration

The planned maintenance works are expected to resume once the restoration of the transmission line is completed. Residents can expect power supply to be restored once the works are finished, but the exact timing is yet to be confirmed.
