An illegal miner, popularly known as a galamseyer, was left in tears after officials from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) reportedly set his motorcycle ablaze during an operation.
The emotional moment, captured in a video circulating on social media, showed the young man crying helplessly as flames consumed the motorcycle believed to have been used for illegal mining activities.
Others present at the scene were also seen standing in fear and panic as the operation unfolded.
According to reports, the exercise formed part of an ongoing crackdown against illegal mining activities in some parts of the country. NAIMOS officials have in recent months intensified operations aimed at seizing and destroying equipment allegedly used for galamsey.
The burning of excavators, motorbikes and other logistics linked to illegal mining has continued to spark mixed reactions among Ghanaians, with some supporting the tough measures while others question the destruction of property without court processes.
Meanwhile, authorities maintain that the operations are necessary in the fight against environmental destruction and the pollution of water bodies caused by illegal mining activities.
