Energy Minister Sounds Alarm on Pylon Safety Following Devastating Tanker Blast
Warning Issued After Fuel Tanker Explosion Damages Transmission Line
The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has warned the public against carrying out unauthorized activities under electricity pylons following a devastating fuel tanker blast that damaged the Tema–Achimota 161kV transmission line near Ashaiman Middle East.
According to reports, a fuel tanker undergoing welding works beneath the transmission line exploded, propelling part of the tanker more than 300 metres into one of the transmission towers. The impact compromised the structural integrity of the tower and highlighted the dangers associated with encroachment and unauthorized activities around transmission infrastructure.
Minister Inspects Ongoing Restoration Works
Dr Jinapor issued the warning after inspecting ongoing emergency restoration works on the affected transmission line. He said the damage occurred when the fuel tanker exploded, propelling part of the tanker into one of the transmission towers.
Government Takes Steps to Protect Critical Infrastructure
Dr Jinapor said the government would continue to take steps to protect critical transmission infrastructure and urged the public to comply with safety regulations governing the use of areas around electricity transmission lines. He cautioned the public against operating under these electricity pylons, as this can result in loss of life and damage to property.
Public Warned Against Unauthorized Activities
The Minister emphasized the importance of respecting safety regulations and warned the public against carrying out unauthorized activities under electricity pylons. "This incident underscores the dangers of encroachment and unauthorized activities around transmission infrastructure," Dr Jinapor said.
A Call for Public Cooperation
Dr Jinapor's warning comes as the government continues to work towards ensuring the safe and efficient transmission of electricity across the country. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of public cooperation in maintaining critical infrastructure.
As the government takes steps to protect critical transmission infrastructure, the public is urged to respect safety regulations and avoid engaging in unauthorized activities under electricity pylons. The consequences of such actions can be devastating, as the recent fuel tanker blast has shown.
