Church Sees Significant Debt Relief: Outstanding Balance Plummets Amid

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG) has seen significant debt relief, with outstanding balances plummeting after a concerted effort to restore the Church's financial stability.

The Church's outstanding debt had risen to approximately GH¢14.25 million by 2026, after standing at around GH¢7.1 million in 2021. This development was announced at the 12th General Assembly of the EPCG, currently underway at the Church's headquarters in Ho in the Volta Region.

Debt Repayment Efforts Underway

The EPCG said its outstanding debt had risen to about GH¢14.25 million by 2026, after standing at approximately GH¢7.1 million in 2021. The liabilities were accumulated through unserviced loans, construction costs, membership dues, and subscriptions owed to partner organisations, among other obligations.

Addressing the 12th General Assembly of the Church, Moderator Rt Rev Dr Lt Col Bliss Kofi Agbeko announced that about GH¢7.1 million of the debt has been paid. The Church said its outstanding debt had risen to about GH¢14.25 million by 2026, after standing at approximately GH¢7.1 million in 2021.

Stricter Financial Measures Implemented

The introduction of stringent measures under the guidance of Moderator Rt Rev Dr Lt Col Bliss Kofi Agbeko ensured financial discipline, leading to the partial settlement of the debt. The Moderator said that his team had no space to breathe due to the debt burden.

He explained that the current administration paid a total of GH¢4,009,559.39 of the debt inherited. In addition, a total of GH¢7,067,945.44, being the other debts, membership dues, and subscriptions due to partners between 2020 and 2026, has been settled. This brings the total debt-related payments by this administration to GH¢11,077,504.83.

Church Emphasizes Need for Financial Prudence

The Moderator stressed the need to operate profitably in the activities of the church and its assets to prevent accruing debt. He lamented that monies used to pay the debt could have been invested to acquire landing properties and to strengthen agents' welfare and salaries.

He announced the establishment of a water-producing factory which recorded a revenue growth of about 22.88% from 2024 to 2025, surmounting challenges encountered. The Moderator called for the Church to continue educating congregations on proper waste disposal, handwashing, clean surroundings, responsible use of water, and the protection of water bodies.

Focus on Sanitation and Cleanliness

The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, urged the E.P Church to promote proper sanitation practices, urging the Church to support the government's national sanitation drive. He said the Church has a very important role to play in this national agenda.

The Minister encouraged the EPCG to continue educating congregations on proper waste disposal, handwashing, clean surroundings, responsible use of water, and the protection of water bodies. The 12th General Assembly, which is the last for Col Bliss Agbeko, will end on Sunday, 16th August 2026, with a thanksgiving service.
