Bellingham Breaks England World Cup Goals Record

Jude Bellingham has become the first Englishman to score seven goals at a single World Cup, netting the final kick of a 6-4 win over France in the third-place play-off.

The Real Madrid midfielder had been level with Gary Lineker and team-mate Harry Kane on six. Lineker scored six times at Mexico '86, while Kane managed six in Russia in 2018 and matched that tally at this tournament.

Bellingham, 23, came on in the 79th minute and left his mark late.

His goal came with the last touch of the match. He led a counter-attack from the halfway line, carried the ball to the France box, beat a defender and slotted into the bottom corner.

Former England midfielder Danny Murphy praised the finish on BBC One as it happened.

"He has such confidence in his own ability," Murphy said. "The patience, the skill, the shot. What a goal from England's best player."

The record moment was not the only talking point of the closing stages.

Twelve minutes before Bellingham's goal, he looked set to take a penalty. Instead he handed the ball to Bukayo Saka, who scored to complete his hat-trick.

Saka explained afterwards that there was never any doubt over who would take the spot-kick.

"No, Jude was never taking it," Saka told BBC One. "He was the first one to say go and get your hat-trick, so none of them came to distract me. I was always going to take it."

The gesture handed Saka a treble and pushed the game further out of France's reach in a high-scoring play-off that finished 6-4.

Bellingham's late arrival off the bench and immediate impact added to a tournament in which he has grown into one of England's central figures.

His seven goals now place him ahead of two of the country's most recognised forwards at a World Cup, a mark no England player had reached before at a single edition.

For Kane, the tournament ends with him sharing part of the story. His six goals across two World Cups had matched Lineker until Bellingham moved clear.

England leave the tournament with a third-place finish after the win over France.
