Accra Residents Face Sunday Power Outage for Emergency Repairs

Residents in parts of the Greater Accra Region can expect a power outage on Sunday, August 16, 2026, as the Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) carries out emergency repairs on a damaged transmission tower. The tower, located on the Tema–Achimota 161kV transmission line at Ashaiman, was damaged after a fuel tanker exploded while welding work was being carried out on its tank within the transmission line's Right-of-Way (RoW).

Emergency Repairs Scheduled for Sunday

GRIDCo has announced that the emergency restoration works will require a power interruption from 3:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. During this time, engineers and technical teams will work to safely replace the damaged tower and restore the integrity of the transmission line. The company has apologized to affected customers for the inconvenience and appreciates the public's patience and cooperation.

GRIDCo warned individuals, businesses, and other entities against encroaching on transmission line corridors, citing the Transmission Line Protection Regulations, 1967 (L.I. 542), as amended by L.I. 1737 of 2004. The regulations prohibit activities including unauthorized construction, excavation, drilling, commercial operations, lorry parks, shops, garages, and other activities that could interfere with the safe operation and maintenance of the transmission system.

Clearance of Unauthorized Activities

GRIDCo also reminded the public that all persons, businesses, land users, and other entities encroaching on transmission line Rights-of-Way across the country must cease unauthorized activities and vacate the affected corridors within one month. The company will work with the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, relevant statutory institutions, and security agencies to enforce the law and remove unauthorized structures and activities from the protected corridors.

The directive to clear unauthorized activities comes from the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor. GRIDCo said it will strictly enforce the law and ensure that all transmission line corridors are protected from encroachment.

Safety Concerns and Precautions

GRIDCo emphasized that the Right-of-Way is not an area available for unrestricted occupation or commercial use. The company stressed that any activity that could interfere with the safe operation and maintenance of the transmission system is strictly prohibited. The safety of the public and the integrity of the transmission system are top priorities for GRIDCo.

The power outage on Sunday will affect residents in parts of the Greater Accra Region, and GRIDCo has apologized for the inconvenience. The company is working to restore power as soon as possible and appreciates the public's cooperation during this time.
