NRSA Investigates Possible Role of Aboboyaa in Deadly Ofankor Crash

A devastating crash on the Accra-Nsawam Highway at Ofankor Barrier left 12 people dead and 22 injured in the early hours of the morning. The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) is now investigating a possible link between the incident and a broken-down tricycle, or 'aboboyaa', on the road.

Investigation Underway

The NRSA is gathering information to determine the cause of the crash, which occurred at around 4 a.m. between the Ofankor Barrier and the John Teye enclave. According to Felix Owusu, Senior Planning Manager at the NRSA, preliminary information gathered at the scene suggests that a tricycle had broken down on the road, causing a tipper truck loaded with sand to stop behind it.

Two Sprinter buses carrying passengers subsequently stopped behind the truck, creating a queue of vehicles on the stretch. The crash involved seven vehicles – two tipper trucks, two Sprinter buses, two saloon cars, and the tricycle.

The Chain of Events

Felix Owusu explained that the initial impact triggered a series of subsequent collisions involving the other vehicles, leading to the heavy casualties. However, he cautioned against treating the preliminary account as the confirmed cause of the crash, since much of the information was obtained from bystanders. The NRSA is awaiting the full police report and further accounts from surviving drivers and passengers to determine exactly how the accident unfolded.

Waiting for the Full Picture

Speaking on Citi FM on Thursday, August 13, Felix Owusu emphasized that the NRSA was relying on eyewitness accounts and had not yet received the full police report. "As I said from the beginning, all that we are hearing are accounts given by bystanders, and so we don’t want to rely solely on that," he said. The NRSA is waiting for the police to provide a full report that will tell them what exactly happened and how each of the subsequent accidents or crashes occurred.

The Ofankor crash has raised concerns about road safety in the country, particularly in areas where road conditions are poor. The NRSA's investigation will aim to identify the root cause of the crash and prevent similar incidents in the future.
