Queen Margrethe II is the queen of Denmark and the head of state. She is also the supreme authority of the Church of Denmark and the commander-in-chief of the Danish Defence.

She is the world’s only current queen regnant and the longest-serving current female head of state. She is also a scenographer, costume designer, and illustrator.

As sovereign, Margrethe has received 42 official state visits and she has undertaken 55 foreign state visits herself.

She and the royal family have made several other foreign visits.

Queen Margrethe II’s parents were King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid. King Frederik IX was born in 1899 and became king of Denmark in 1947.

He was a popular and modern monarch who supported democracy, social welfare, and women’s rights. He was also an avid sailor and musician.

He died in 1972 after a long illness. Queen Ingrid was born in 1910 and was the daughter of King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden and Princess Margaret of Connaught.

She married Frederik in 1935 and became queen consort of Denmark in 1947. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who supported many charitable causes. She died in 2000 at the age of 90.
