Biography
Gyakie, born Jackline Acheampong on December 16, 1999, is a Ghanaian R&B and afro-fusion singer celebrated as Song Bird. Her career took off in 2019 with the release of her debut single, “Love is Pretty,” which was followed by “Never Like This.”
In August 2020, Gyakie’s “Forever” from her five-track EP, Seed, gained significant airplay and topped charts in Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria. Gyakie’s father is Nana Acheampong.
Early life and education.
Gyakie was born and raised in Kumasi, which is located in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. She successfully completed her secondary education at T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School in Kumasi. Subsequently, she pursued her undergraduate degree at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), specializing in International Business.
Professional life
Gyakie was born into a musical family, and by the age of eight, she began accompanying her father in the recording studio. She was also inspired by Aṣa and Ghanaian musician Omar Sterling of the R2Bees group. At the beginning of her career, Gyakie faced significant pressure. In a BBC Africa interview with DJ Edu, she admitted to frequently crying when she started her professional music career because her management was focused on immediate results.
Gyakie’s debut single, “Love Is Pretty,” was released in February 2019, followed by “Never Like This.” In August 2020, she launched her five-track EP titled “Seed.” The “Forever” track from this EP gained significant airplay in Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria. It reached the top of music charts such as Billboard’s Top Triller Global and Shazam’s Top 200 charts.
In March 2021, Gyakie released a remix of “Forever” featuring Nigerian singer Omah Lay. That same month, she was honored as the emerging woman of the year at the 3Music Women’s Brunch for the 3Music Awards. She has secured an international record deal with Sony Music Entertainment, RCA Records UK, and Sony Music Africa.
In March 2022, Gyakie was named Woman of the Year at the 3Music Awards during the 3Music Women’s Brunch. In June 2022, she participated in the Grammys’ new series “Herbal tea and white sofas,” where artists share their backstage essentials. Gyakie continued her musical journey by releasing her second EP, “My Diary,” in July 2022. The EP includes a collaboration with Nigerian musician Davido. She also released a new single, “December,” in April 2024.
