Outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha has laid out the changes he made to the party's Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) during his four years in office.
In a post on social media reflecting on his tenure, Salam said one of his first tasks was rebuilding trust among TESCON members. Some executives had been blocked from voting in the previous youth elections because of a court injunction.
"I left the stadium befuddled with thoughts on immediate work to resuscitate TESCON, who were denied the opportunity to vote due to a purported court injunction by one of the aspirants," he said.
He said his team went back to the affected executives to apologise and then funded a nationwide verification exercise.
"We had to apologise to the TESCON executives and financed my TESCON coordinators to tour the country and verify every single institution," he said.
That review changed the number of recognised TESCON chapters. According to Salam, the figure was cut from 295 institutions to 255 for the party's upcoming elections.
"We pruned down the number from 295 institutions to the current 255," he stated.
He said newly approved institutions would be brought in fully after the elections. The move, he explained, was meant to avoid disputes over the figures during the polls.
Salam also said he formalised the position of TESCON patrons and set up regional TESCON coordinators to strengthen the student wing.

"I leave behind, proudly, a formalised patrons of TESCON. It was important to do this to encourage and recognise the hard work of patrons in our various chapters," he said.
Beyond the student structures, the outgoing youth organiser pointed to a platform he called Youth Connect. He said it was used to engage young voters across all 16 regions during the party's campaign activities.
He said mobilisation on campuses and in communities was another focus. He described these efforts as "campus invasion" and "ghetto invasion" programmes.
"I was in the ghettos and all these are captured on videos," he added.
TESCON is the NPP's tertiary student wing, made up of chapters on university and college campuses. The group has long been used by the party to recruit and organise young supporters.
Youth organisation has become a contested area within the party, with control of student and youth structures often shaping internal elections.
Salam Mustapha is expected to hand over the position after completing his four-year term as NPP National Youth Organiser.
