TV personality and co-host of TV3’s New Day, Cookie Tee, along with gospel singer Celestine Donkor, have extended heartfelt apologies following their lighthearted remarks about Ewe surnames during a live broadcast on TV3.
During an episode of Today’s Woman with Cookie Tee, Celestine Donkor shared an anecdote about praying for a husband without a ‘heavy’ Ewe surname, a sentiment Cookie Tee, whose maternal heritage is Ewe, echoed in agreement. Their casual banter, however, sparked criticism from some viewers who perceived it as disparaging towards the Ewe ethnic group.
In response to the backlash, Cookie Tee addressed the issue on Thursday morning while hosting the New Day Show, clarifying that their remarks were intended as light-hearted conversation starters and not as a means to belittle the Ewe community.
Celestine Donkor’s Apology
She expressed regret over the unintended offense caused, stating, “It was supposed to be an icebreaker to a conversation, it wasn’t supposed to be the way it was taken at all. This morning, sincerely from my heart, I just want to apologize to all of you, it was a joke that went bad.”
Cookie Tee went on to extend her apologies specifically to the Ewe community and all Ghanaians, emphasizing that their comments were meant in jest and not as an affront to any particular ethnic group.
In offering these apologies, both Cookie Tee and Celestine Donkor seek to address and rectify any hurt caused by their remarks, reaffirming their respect for Ghana’s diverse cultural heritage.
