A violent clash between soldiers and illegal miners, known as “galamseyers,” occurred at the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine in Ghana’s Ashanti Region on January 18, 2025. The tragic incident resulted in at least 10 people losing their lives and one soldier being injured.

According to a statement signed by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations, the clash occurred around 11:00 pm when approximately 60 illegal miners breached the mine’s security fence at Côte d’Or Ramp. The miners reportedly attempted to access the Deep Decline section of the mine.

The miners, armed with locally made rifles, pump-action guns, machetes, and other weapons, fired at a military patrol team on Operation HALT II duties. In self-defense, the soldiers returned fire, leading to the fatalities. The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) emphasized that military personnel on authorized missions have the right to use appropriate force, including lethal measures, to protect themselves, civilians, and property.

The clash has escalated tensions in the area, with videos circulating on social media showing bodies at the scene, smoke, and chaotic moments. The GAF has warned illegal miners to stay away from mining areas and avoid armed confrontations, as such actions could lead to fatal outcomes.
