Willis Reed was a retired American basketball player who played for the New York Knicks in the NBA from 1964 to 1974. He was widely considered one of the greatest players in Knicks history and one of the best power forwards of all time.

Reed was born on June 25, 1942, in Hico, Louisiana. He played college basketball at Grambling State University and was selected by the New York Knicks with the eighth overall pick in the 1964 NBA Draft.

Reed quickly established himself as one of the top players in the league. He was a seven-time All-Star, a five-time All-NBA First Team selection, and a two-time NBA champion. He was also named the NBA Finals MVP in both of the Knicks’ championship seasons (1970 and 1973).

Perhaps Reed’s most memorable moment came in Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals, when he famously limped onto the court with a torn thigh muscle to lead the Knicks to victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

The moment has become one of the most iconic in NBA history and is often cited as an example of Reed’s incredible toughness and determination.

Reed retired from the NBA in 1974 and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982.

After his playing career, he went on to coach in the NBA and served as an executive for several teams, including the New Jersey Nets and the New Orleans Hornets.

Willis Reed, the legendary New York Knicks captain, died at the age of 80.

The cause of death has not been disclosed, but longtime NBA reporter Peter Vescey reported on Twitter that the Louisiana native had been dealing with congestive heart problems ‘over the past year or so.’ He had been undergoing rehab in order to walk, Vescey wrote.
