Ghanaian rapper Michael Owusu Addo, better known as Sarkodie, has filed a case in the High Court’s Commercial Division against Ecobank Ghana.
Due to the bank’s alleged unauthorized use of a picture that looks like him, the artist is requesting damages, a permanent injunction, and the retraction of all publications that are associated with it.
According to Sarkodie, Ecobank Ghana violated his rights and filed a lawsuit after using his image without getting the required consents. He wants a court order prohibiting the bank from using his picture in any other way, compensation for the unlawful use, and an injunction to stop all publications that include his image.
This case highlights the value of intellectual property rights and the requirement that businesses get permission before exploiting people’s photos. Ecobank Ghana and other businesses that use celebrity endorsements in their marketing efforts may be greatly impacted by a decision in Sarkodie’s favor.
