Russell Brown is a Puisne Judge (i.e., a judge of the Supreme Court of Canada) who was appointed to the court on August 31, 2015, by then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper. He replaced Justice Marshall Rothstein, who retired from the court.
Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, Justice Brown served as a judge on the Alberta Court of Appeal, having been appointed to that position in 2014.
He also previously served as a judge on the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, as well as a professor of law at the University of Alberta.
Justice Brown is considered to be a conservative-leaning judge and has been noted for his rulings on issues such as freedom of religion and property rights.
He has also authored several notable decisions during his time on the Supreme Court, including the 2019 decision in R v Barton, which clarified the legal definition of consent in sexual assault cases.
