The Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured unpaid Nurses and Health Workers that their outstanding salaries will soon be settled.

Speaking through a statement issued by the Ministry and signed by Tony Goodman, Head of Health Training Institutions & Spokesperson, the Minister emphasized his commitment to resolving the payment challenges faced by the last batch of recruited nurses and other affected staff.

According to the Ministry, financial clearance was granted in August 2024 to recruit about 13,500 nurses, but this clearance expired in December of the same year.

As a result, many nurses continued working without financial provision to cover their salaries.

“Instead of asking them to stay home, the current government allowed the nurses to continue working while provisions were made for their payment,” the statement explained.

So far, more than 7,000 nurses have received their salaries, while about 6,500 are still awaiting payment. The Ministry said the government had made special concessions to retain the nurses and assured those still affected that their salaries would be cleared in due course.

The release also noted that similar payment delays had affected pharmacists, house officers, rotation nurses, junior doctors, and allied health interns in 2023 and 2024. However, the Ministry indicated that allowances for pharmacists and house officers had been resolved, while rotation nurses, allied health interns, and junior doctors who were not paid last year would also receive their payments soon.

“The Health Minister reaffirmed his commitment to supporting health workers, stating that their welfare remains a priority as government works to strengthen Ghana’s health sector,” the statement read.

The Ministry further stressed that government is adopting “every pragmatic approach” to address challenges of this nature and remains determined to ensure that such issues do not persist going forward.
