In a high-profile legal battle, Ghanaian social media influencer Bright Kojo Onipa-Yede, popularly known as Kojo Forex, has filed a lawsuit against Albert Nathaniel Hyde, known online as Bongo Ideas, seeking GHS 1 million in damages for libel.
The case, heard in the High Court of Justice in Accra on January 28, 2025, before Justice Forson Agyapong Baah, stems from a series of allegedly defamatory statements Bongo Ideas posted on Twitter between February and April 2023.
Kojo Forex, a respected forex trading influencer with a substantial following, 78,800 on Twitter, 156,000 on Instagram, and 156,000 YouTube subscribers, claims Bongo Ideas’ tweets damaged his reputation.
The defendant, described as a self-professed internet blogger notorious for controversial statements, allegedly labeled Kojo Forex a “Ponzi-schemer” and “fraudster,” accusing him of running a deceptive online money-making empire. Specific tweets cited in the lawsuit include accusations that Kojo Forex “steals from people” and operates a “get-rich-quick scheme,” alongside calls for him to “pay the people you’ve defrauded.”
Kojo Forex is also seeking a perpetual injunction to stop Bongo Ideas from making further defamatory remarks, a public apology, and retraction on Twitter, as well as aggravated and exemplary damages for the “reckless and malicious” publications. Despite being served with the lawsuit in July 2023, Bongo Ideas did not enter an appearance or defense, leading to the case proceeding uncontested.
The plaintiff, who runs a forex trading academy, argues these statements have harmed his credibility and business. This legal action highlights the growing tensions in Ghana’s digital space, where public figures increasingly face online criticism, raising questions about the boundaries of free speech versus reputational harm. The court’s ruling is eagerly anticipated.
