From Amalienborg’s gilded halls, Queen Margrethe II bids farewell. In a surprise New Year’s Eve pronouncement, Denmark’s beloved monarch announced her abdication, setting the stage for Crown Prince Frederik’s reign.
After 52 years on the throne, the 83-year-old queen gracefully steps aside, entrusting her son with the crown on January 14th, the anniversary of her own ascension.
Prime Minister Frederiksen hailed Margrethe as “the embodiment of Denmark,” praising her lifelong dedication and “words that gave voice to our nation’s soul.”
From mingling with Copenhageners to braving Afghan winters alongside troops, the chain-smoking, linguist-designer queen captured hearts with her warmth and strength.
Margrethe’s reign crisscrossed the land, touching every corner of her realm, including Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Hers was a legacy born from Viking lineage, steeped in wisdom and grace. Though a constitutional figure, her knowledge of law and politics ran deep, guiding her in signing each decree.
