Artemio Maldonado, 18, and Azucena Sanchez, 20, are charged in the deaths of four people found fatally shot in a Dallas apartment unit.

According to court documents, Sanchez was the ex-girlfriend of one of the victims, and they were involved in a child custody dispute over their son. She told cops that she and Maldonado broke into the house with the intent of robbing it.

She claimed she had no idea who was inside. According to authorities, Maldonado admitted to shooting the victims. Both suspects took a box from a closet that they thought held money but turned out to be empty.

Authorities said they learned about the popping sounds coming from the unit around 1 a.m., but no one called police.

Both suspects were apprehended a few miles away from the crime scene around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Child Protective Services was contacted after the infant was discovered in the apartment. It was unclear whether the child was the subject of a custody battle between Sanchez and one of the victims.
